Matthew Richardson -Head Coach

My Dragon Boating Background

I started Dragon Boating in 2004 as a under 18 with my local club Amathus DBC where I paddled for their Premier Crew and helped them win the league in 2006, 07, 08 and 09.

 

My GB Dragon Boat Background

2005 to 06 - I represented GB at the World's in Berlin & at the European's in Prague 06 were we won 2 Gold & 3 Silver medals.

2007 to 08 - I was appointed as the Assistant Coach & coached the team to the world's in Australia 07 & the European's in Italy 08, were the team won 2 silver & 3 bronze medals.

2008 to present - I was successfully appointed as the new Under 18 Great Britain Head Coach in November 08. The Team since then has won 6 Gold, 3 Silver & 8 Bronze at both World's & European's.

2015 to present - I was successfully appointed as the new under 24's Great Britain Head Coach in September 15.

 

My Role and Responsibilities

My Responsibilities are safety, selection, preparation, coaching and performance of the team. It is also to ensure programmes are in place for individual athletes so that they are prepared to their best ability to perform to the highest standard they can. It is my overall responsibility to organise training weekends, training weeks and championships.

 

My Experience and Qualifications

I am a qualified Level 3 Dragon Boat Coach, Canoe, Kayak, Sailing, Raft Building, Archery, Mountain Biking, Football, Navigation and D of Ecoach/leader & work with people between the ages of 6 to 25 years since 2004, these young people come from all backgrounds with different abilities. I have a degree in sports coaching from Edge Hill University, bringing the latest and most effective ways of coaching from the psychological to the physical aspects of coaching to my role. I currently teach PE and ICT in a High school with children who have SEN (Social, Emotional, Needs) and have been at this school since 2012 while also coaching for St Helens Sports Development for the past 10 years.

Alex Rimmer - Team Physio

My Dragon Boating Background

I started Dragon Boating in 2006 as a under 18 with my local club Amathus DBC.

 

My GB Dragon Boat Background

  • 2007 - I paddled for the GB Under 18's in the world's in Australia were the team set the fastest GB under 18 time of 1.59 over 500m.

 

  • 2009 to present - I was successfully appointed as the Under 18 Great Britain Physiotherapist in September 09.

 

My Role and Responsibilities

My Responsibilities are safe guarding and to ensure the well-being of the paddlers both physically and mentally while ensuring that they are ok to train and race. 

 

My Experience and Qualifications

I am a  fully qualified physiotherapist with a degree in sports physiotherapy from Edge Hill University, bringing the latest and most effective techniques in physiotherapy.

Sam Richardson - U24's Assistant Coach

My Dragon Boating Background

I started Dragon Boating in 2006 as a under 18 with my local club Amathus DBC where I’ve paddled for their Premier Crew.

 

My GB Dragon Boat Background

  • 2007 - I represented GB under 18’s at the World's in Sydney, Australia were we became the fastest 500m u18 team in GB history with a 1:59 over 500m's

  • 2008 - I represented GB under 18’s at the Euro's in Italy were we won 2 Silver & 3 Bronze medals

  • 2009- I represented GB under 18’s at the World's in Prague were we won 1 Bronze medal

 

My Role and Responsibilities

  • To assist in the development and encouragement of the Squad

  • To ensure that squad standards are high

  • To ensure that tasks that have been assigned are being done

  • To ensure that the team spirit and morale of the team is kept high

  • To assist in Dragon Boat sessions

  • To gain knowledge of individual paddlers needs and personalities

  • To be a point of call for the paddlers wants and needs

 

Championship specific responsibilities are:

  • To give advice to paddlers

  • To lead warm ups and warm downs

  • To lead stretching sessions

  • To ensure of water and food consumption is happening

Josh Stroud - U24 Captain

My Dragon Boating Background

I started Dragon Boating in 2011 as a under 18 with my local club Hurricanes DBC where I’ve paddled for their Premier Crew ever since.

 

My GB Dragon Boat Background

  • 2011- I represented GB under 18’s at the World's in Tampa were we won 2 Gold & 2 Bronze medals

  • 2012 - I captained the GB under 18’s at the European's in Nottingham were I led the team to 4 Gold, 1 Silver medal and overall European champions.

  • 2013 to 2015 - I was successfully appointed as the Under 18 Great Britain Mentor in September 13.
